How to Compare Cooking Fuels Fairly

You cannot just compare the price of a gas cylinder to your electricity bill and call it done. What matters is the cost per unit of useful heat delivered to the pot — because different stoves waste different amounts of energy before any of it reaches your food.

The key metric is thermal efficiency: what percentage of the fuel's energy actually heats what you are cooking. A gas burner running at full flame loses a lot of heat around the sides of the pot. An electric coil is better but still imperfect. An induction hob transfers nearly all its energy directly to the cookware.

  • LPG gas burner: 50–55% efficiency
  • Electric coil / hotplate: 65–70% efficiency
  • Induction hob: 85–90% efficiency

Once you factor in efficiency and the actual price per kWh of each fuel, the rankings shift considerably from what most people assume.

LPG: What You Are Actually Paying Per kWh

In 2026, a 6kg LPG cylinder refill costs KES 1,200–1,500 depending on brand and location. A 13kg refill runs KES 2,800–3,500. For this comparison, we will use KES 1,500 for 6kg — the higher end of the typical nairobi-and-surroundings price — which works out to KES 250 per kilogram.

LPG contains approximately 12.8 kWh of heat energy per kilogram. At 52% average burner efficiency, the useful heat delivered to your pot is about 6.5 kWh per kg. That puts the effective cost of useful cooking energy from LPG at:

KES 250 ÷ 6.5 kWh ≈ KES 38 per useful kWh

If you buy gas at KES 200/kg (a cheaper 13kg refill), that cost drops to around KES 31 per useful kWh. But even at the cheaper rate, LPG is delivering cooking energy at a higher cost than KPLC domestic electricity.

Electric Cooking: The KPLC Tariff Reality

KPLC operates on tiered domestic tariffs. The first 50 kWh per month sit in the lifeline band at a subsidised rate. Most households with a fridge, television, and some lighting use 100–200 kWh per month, which puts typical cooking consumption solidly in the upper domestic band — approximately KES 20–26 per kWh inclusive of fuel cost, fixed charges, and VAT when amortised across usage.

We will use KES 23/kWh as a representative mid-range figure for a household using 100–150 kWh per month. At 67% efficiency for an electric coil, the effective cost per useful kWh is:

KES 23 ÷ 0.67 ≈ KES 34 per useful kWh

For an induction hob at 88% efficiency:

KES 23 ÷ 0.88 ≈ KES 26 per useful kWh

Both are lower than LPG at the KES 38 figure — and the induction hob wins convincingly.

Per-Meal Cost: The Numbers That Matter

Abstract kWh figures only go so far. Here is what each fuel costs for two common Kenyan cooking tasks.

Across both examples, electric cooking costs roughly half of LPG on a per-meal basis, and induction hobs cut costs by nearly two-thirds compared to gas. These are not marginal differences — they compound every day across every meal.

Assume three meals a day, cooking a mix of ugali, rice, stews, and tea. At roughly 90 meals per month:

The savings from switching to electric may appear modest at KES 300–600 per month. But over a year that is KES 3,600–7,200 back in your pocket — and the gap widens as LPG prices continue to track global fuel costs.

Upfront Equipment Cost

Monthly running costs are only part of the picture. What you pay to get started matters too, especially if you are switching from one setup to another.

  • LPG starter kit (6kg cylinder + 2-burner stove, first-time purchase): KES 5,000–8,000. Refills thereafter are KES 1,200–1,500.
  • Electric coil 2-burner hotplate: KES 2,500–5,000. No deposit, no cylinder to manage.
  • Single induction hob: KES 3,000–6,000. But induction only works with magnetic (ferromagnetic) cookware — your aluminium sufuria will not work. New induction-compatible pots cost KES 3,000–6,000 for a basic set, making the full switch KES 6,000–12,000 if you are starting from scratch.

If you already have standard pots and pans, the electric coil hotplate is the cheapest entry point by far. Induction has a higher setup cost but the lowest running cost — it pays back the premium in 12–18 months for most families.

The Reliability Question

This is where LPG's real value lies. Gas cooks regardless of what KPLC is doing. In areas with frequent outages — particularly outside Nairobi — cooking on electricity alone is genuinely impractical. You cannot boil water for tea at 7am if the power has been out since midnight.

Electricity from KPLC has improved significantly in urban areas over the past several years, but load shedding and unplanned outages still occur. For a household that experiences more than 4–6 outage hours per week, electricity as the sole cooking fuel creates real disruption.

The practical conclusion most households arrive at independently is a dual setup: electric (or induction) as the daily workhorse because it is cheaper, with a small 6kg LPG cylinder kept as backup. At KES 1,500 for a refill that lasts months at backup frequency, that insurance cost is low.

Safety: What to Know

LPG is safe when handled correctly, but the risks are real and worth naming. Leaking gas is heavier than air and pools at floor level — it does not dissipate the way people assume. Never store your gas cylinder in a basement, below ground level, or in an unventilated room. Store cylinders upright in a ventilated space, keep connections tight, and turn off the valve at the cylinder after every use. If you ever smell gas, open windows and exit before switching any electrical appliance on or off.

Electric cooking risks are lower in terms of explosion hazard, but poor wiring is common in older Kenyan housing stock. Ensure your sockets and circuit are rated for the load — a 2-burner electric stove draws 2,000–3,000W. Induction hobs add the requirement of compatible cookware but have no open heating element, which makes them safer around children than gas or coil stoves.

Charcoal and Biogas: Brief Notes

Charcoal remains the cheapest cooking fuel per meal in many rural areas — but the cost is health, not money. Cooking indoors with charcoal exposes your household to particulate matter and carbon monoxide at levels that damage lungs over years of exposure. The World Health Organization classifies household air pollution from cooking fires as a major health risk. The financial savings do not offset that reality.

Biogas is attractive in theory — you use organic household and farm waste to generate cooking fuel. In practice it requires a capital investment of KES 80,000–200,000 for installation, ongoing organic feedstock management, and space for a digester. It suits a homestead with livestock and land, not a Nairobi apartment. If you have the setup for it, the running cost over time is excellent.

For most urban households, the numbers make a clear case for electric cooking. The per-meal savings are real, the equipment cost is lower, and there is no cylinder to manage. The only genuine argument for LPG as a primary fuel is reliability — and that argument holds in areas where KPLC outages are frequent enough to disrupt daily cooking. If your power supply is reasonably stable, cooking on gas is costing you roughly twice what electricity would.
